PROPEL

Propel is a startup creating a new green biofueling retail presence. In 2006, atelierjones was commissioned to develop a kit-of-parts design for a fueling station that illustrated Propel’s commitment to sustainability, and introduced new ecological design elements to the conventional gas station.

The prototype station built in Seattle illustrates some of the potential sustainable features that can added to stations, and adapted for the climatic concerns of different regions. Solar panels power the station, and rainwater is harvested on the station’s canopy and filtered through louvers into a cistern. This collected water is used to irrigate on-site planters, which grow an assortment of plants used in biofuel production. Other related stations were built up and down the West Coast using the kit-of-parts designed by atelierjones.
