URBAN AGRICULTURE / VERTICAL HYDROPONIC AGRICULTURE

As part of atelierjones’ research into urban agriculture, this project proposes a high yield production farm on the podium of a new development in Seattle. Designed to serve an on-site restaurant run by a farmer/chef, the project includes a series of modular planters on the roof deck and vertical hydroponic gardens attached to the building’s exterior. The vertical hydroponic gardens include a ramp from the parking garage levels for maintenance and public observation of the innovative growing process.

Housed in a lightweight translucent enclosure, the vertical hydroponic wall takes advantage of the highly efficient Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), where a concentrated solution of water and nutrients is pumped through trays, where crops grow with bare roots, eliminating the need for soil.

Facing the entry to the Seattle Seahawks Stadium, the North Lot farm screens the backdrop of the North Lot, and its six-story vehicular concrete garage, with lush south-facing greenery.  The project functions as a working prototype for the Living City. Softly glowing in the evenings, it beckons us to change our disconnected relationship to food in our urban lives.
